How often should you change a padel overgrip?

Volan Padel

Change your padel overgrip as soon as handling feels less secure. There is no single replacement interval that fits every player: how often you play, how much you sweat and the overgrip you use all matter. That follows our racket-care guidance and HEAD’s padel-specific advice. [1]

We’d rather give you a useful check than a pretend expiry date.

Check the feel before the date

Before playing, hold the racket as you normally would. Does the handle feel dependable, or less secure than it used to? If it is less secure, our care guide’s advice is straightforward: replace the overgrip.

Loss of tackiness, a slippery or damp feel, and changes in texture are also signs identified in Babolat’s overgrip guidance. That guide is written for tennis, so these are related manufacturer reference points—not a padel-specific lifespan standard. [3]

You do not need to wait for the wrap to look completely worn out before checking how it feels.

Why a fixed timetable can mislead

HEAD’s padel guide says replacement frequency depends on play, perspiration and overgrip type. It suggests a fresh overgrip at least every two months, but also notes that some advanced players change before every match—and sometimes several times on a warm day. [1]

Babolat’s separate tennis guidance uses a different yardstick: five to ten hours of play as a general rule, adjusted for intensity, sweat and conditions. [3]

Those are manufacturer rules of thumb, not a universal expiry date. For your own racket, the more useful question remains: does your hold still feel secure?

Overgrip or replacement grip?

An overgrip is not the same as the racket’s underlying grip. HEAD describes the base grip as thicker, heavier and more cushioned than an overgrip. [1]

The LTA distinguishes their jobs too: overgrips can add comfort, absorb sweat and improve hold, while replacement grips restore handle shape and tackiness after heavy play. [2]

If the underlying grip is what is worn, replacing only the outer layer is a different job from replacing that base grip. Check which layer needs attention rather than treating the two products as interchangeable.

A simple routine to keep

Check your overgrip before you play, and keep a spare available if you need a change. Our Volan Premium Overgrips are sold in a three-pack; that is a pack-size fact, not a promise about how many sessions each one will last.

For the rest of your kit, our Racket Care guide covers cleaning, storage and transport.

The short version: use time-based guidance as a reminder to check, not a reason to keep playing with a grip that no longer feels secure.
